Music at Pilgrim Church
Pilgrim United Church of Christ prides itself in blending the worship service
with music skillfully performed by our choir and its skilled
choirmaster/organist, Ryoji Shimpo. Our members and visitors join in as well
on several hymns each week. On very special occasions we hear The
Pilgrim Bells performing from above the sanctuary.
In addition, members and visitors often share their talents with the
congregation. In the recent past, we have hosted performances by violin
trios, saxophonists and guest vocalists performing a capella.
Ryogi Shimpo (pictured above) is a pofessional keyboardist and piano
teacher in the Akron area. He is the music director at Pilgrim United Church
of Christ as well as the owner of Shimpo Music Studio, Inc., which provides
instruction in piano and cello. Some of his past experiences include
teaching at Baldwin-Wallace
College Conservatory of Music, performing throughout Ohio and Ontario,
and accompanying everything from dance classes to master's recital to
competitions to "Ode to Joy" at his students' recitals. He holds a bachelor's
degree in music and computer science from the University of Waterloo in
Ontario and a master's degree in piano performance from The University of
Akron, where he studied with Philip Thompson. He has performed in the EJ
Thomas Performing Arts Hall in "MonsterPianos!" in 2008 and 2009.
